Corruption is one intractable challenge that has bedeviled many developing countries particularly Africa of which Ghana is no exception. Various governments have adopted different approaches to eradicate the pervasive corruption that exists in the country. Many government has strategies adopted to eradicate corruption but Ghana still lags behind and ranks poorly in the fight against the age-old canker – corruption .
The secret Agenda news has surveyed failure by successive governments in combating corruption is that as a country we have misunderstood the roots of corruption. Findings of the survey showed that greed and selfishness is one major fundamental root cause of corruption in the country.
Respondents in the survey identified greed and selfishness of public officials as a key cause of corruption in the country. The drive for this selfish and greed is the desire by many Ghanaians especially those in public offices to get rich quick regardless of the fact that the state is at the loosing end . The survey also found that, money is the most common form of corruption in Ghana. This comes as no surprise as the country engages in cash-transactions at almost all levels of trade. The quantum of physical cash in circulation makes money the most available medium to involve in corruption. Further, the evidence of money being the most common form of corruption shows the acquisitive and materialistic nature of Ghanaians.
Even though some public officials have argued that corruption is just an issue of perception , an overwhelming percentage of the respondents (80%) considered the practice to be very high in the country. This point to the fact that citizens are weary of the extent of corruption in Ghana.
"SAN" reports debunked the trivialization of corruption as a mere perception
Due to the debilitating effects of corruption on socio-economic development of any country,
resources and revenue that could be used for the collective development of the country. In fact corruption holds back a country’s progress and keeps the poorest people wallowing in poverty. In Ghana, there is plenty of evidence indicating public officials and some organizations have indulged in corrupt practices to enrich themselves at the expense of the public good.
The Secret Agenda News ( SAN ) from our survey findings has provided some pragmatic recommendations to help curb corruption in the country. Combating the endemic issue of corruption requires active leadership and cooperative individuals who will willingly report corrupt acts to the right authorities. Moreover, recommends ‘going back to the basics’, that is, inculcating in children and young adults to appreciate, internalize and display moral virtues. Further,
enforcement of existing laws which deals with corruption is necessary if the country wants to make strides in the fight against corruption.
